“The Woman Who Walked Away From Love Because of Poverty” Diamond Platnumz Opens Up About the Girlfriend Who Broke His Heart and Inspired His Life-Changing Hit Kamwambie

Before the awards, the sold-out concerts, and the private jets, there was a young man in Tanzania with nothing in his pockets but big dreams and a deep love for a woman named Sarah Davakingin. She was his first love, the one who made him believe in romance — and the one who would later break his heart in a way that still echoes through his music today.

In a candid interview on Way Up with media personality Yee on August 11, 2025, Diamond Platnumz peeled back the curtain on the love story that turned into heartbreak, and the heartbreak that turned into a song which would change his destiny forever.

Diamond says he and Sarah dated for two years, during which she was not shy about telling the world they were in love. But as the months passed, their relationship was weighed down by one undeniable reality poverty.

“She told me directly, without sugarcoating, that she couldn’t keep dating a person who couldn’t take care of her properly,” Diamond recalled. “When a person is poor, they love more than usual because love is the only happiness they have.”

At the time, Diamond was an unknown artist struggling to make ends meet. Still, he poured every ounce of himself into the relationship. “My first girlfriend broke my heart, and I wrote a song about it. I loved her so much, maybe too much. The reason you love like that when you’re broke is because there’s no holding back — that’s the only joy you have,” he said.

The breakup wasn’t mysterious or vague. Sarah told him to his face that she could not imagine a future with someone who lacked the financial means to provide the life she wanted. And just like that, two years of love ended with a few painfully honest words.

Diamond remembers that day vividly. “I remember that day I cried. When I got home, I was so sad and needed to do something to help myself. I went straight to the studio, poured out everything I was going through into that song, and that’s how Kamwambie was born,” he said.

Kamwambie meaning “Tell Her” wasn’t just another song. It was the raw translation of his heartbreak into melody, a confession to the world about a man who loved deeply but was left behind because he had nothing material to offer.

To Diamond’s surprise, the track resonated across Tanzania and far beyond its borders. It earned massive airplay, won him a wave of fans, and catapulted him into stardom. “After releasing that song, it became so popular and completely transformed my life,” he said.

Years later, when asked about the man she left behind, Sarah confirmed they have not been romantically involved since. She now has her own family, and she firmly denies regretting her decision to walk away before Diamond became rich and famous. Still, she admits they remain on friendly terms.

Today, fans see Diamond Platnumz as one of Africa’s most successful artists, but behind his glittering career lies the story of a young man who turned heartbreak into art — and of the woman who, unknowingly, gave him the fuel to reach the heights she once thought he couldn’t.
